Why I Created Kide Connect

Some of the biggest communication problems don't happen because people don't speak the same language. They happen because people assume they understand each other. I know this because I have lived it.

I was born and raised in Finland, where communication is often direct, honest and concise. More than twenty-five years ago, I moved to Italy, where I discovered a very different way of communicating—equally rich, but shaped by different traditions, expectations and social norms. At first, I thought learning Italian would be the biggest challenge.It wasn't. The real challenge was learning to understand another culture.

Over the years, I realised that the same words can carry different meanings depending on culture. A meeting, a negotiation, feedback, silence, punctuality, hierarchy, humour or even a simple email can be interpreted in completely different ways. I also realised that misunderstandings are rarely caused by a lack of language skills or goodwill. They happen because each of us sees the world through the lens of our own culture.

This insight shaped my professional journey. For more than thirty years, I have worked as a translator, helping companies communicate accurately across languages. For over a decade, I have taught languages to professionals, helping people gain confidence in English and Finnish. But the more I worked with international clients, the more I saw the same pattern. Excellent language skills alone were not enough. Companies needed help connecting people—not just translating words.

That is why I created Kide Connect.

"Kide" is the Finnish word for a crystal—the tiny structure from which something strong, clear and beautiful is formed. Like a crystal, meaningful communication is created when individual pieces come together in harmony. To me, this is the perfect metaphor for international communication. When languages, cultures and perspectives come together with understanding and respect, communication becomes clear, relationships become stronger and collaboration becomes easier.

Today, Kide Connect helps organisations, teams and professionals communicate across languages and cultures with confidence. Whether through language training, intercultural communication consulting or localisation, my goal is always the same: to remove barriers, build understanding and create genuine connections. Because successful international communication is not about speaking perfect English. It is about understanding people. And when people truly understand one another, opportunities grow, businesses thrive and lasting partnerships are built.
